Chittagong, November 06, 2020: Traffic jam in GEC turning has become a regular intolerable experience for the citizens of Chittagong city. It has been a regular nuisance.

GEC turning is very important for the inhabitants of Chittagong because it has become the heart of the city. Some renowned schools are situated here.

Besides, there are a number of commercial and business institutions and shopping malls are being established in this circle.

So a lot of vehicles cross GEC turning daily to reach their desired place. That’s why a traffic jam occurs.

There are lots of reasons behind this hectic problem. Weak and outworn traffic system, lack of knowledge, indifference, and impertinence of the drivers are the main reasons.

The rickshaw pullers often break the traffic signals. The drivers of the city service buses do not abide by the traffic rules.

They don’t hesitate to halt their buses in the middle of the road to take passengers. It often causes unusual traffic jams.

Dreadful fire at ABC Garments: 30 died, 400 injured

Staff Correspondent: Last night a devastating fire broke out at ABC Garments in Kalurghat industrial area, Chittagong which caused a heavy loss of life.

According to the fire brigade, the fire originated on the top floor because of a short circuit.

Talking to some of the injured workers we have come to know that there were some chemicals and thus the fire took a repulsive look. At that time the workers were busy at their work.

When they guessed that the fire had broken out, they had gone mad. As there were no such facilities for extinguishing the fire, they hurried to get themselves out of that building.

Their screaming made the ambiance of the area heavy. There was only one stair to come out of that building. All the workers tried heart and soul to be rescued.

A few of them died in the stampede. Few workers jumped from the building to escape from the conflagration. Some of them died in that process and some injured themselves badly.

The fire brigade rushed to the spot. However, because of their limited compliance, they failed to save the lives of those innocent workers.

The locals also stretched their helping hand to save the workers trapped inside. After a tussle for almost three and a half hours, the fire was somehow abated.

But it was too late.  According to the assessment of the fire brigade, forty people have met their final end.

So far and about four hundred succumbed to injury. The injured were taken to the nearby hospitals.

The president and the prime minister expressed deep shock and commiseration to the bereaved families.

The government has declared a compensation of taka one lac to the families of the dead people and assured to provide proper treatment to the injured workers.

It is very surprising that the officials of that enterprise disappeared enigmatically after the accident. Our correspondent tried to make contact with the chairman of that industry.

Mr.Jasim but his phone was switched off. A three-member investigation team has been formed to trace out the reason for the fire.

The injured workers and families who lost their earning members demanded exemplary punishment of the proprietors of the factory for their negligence.

This accident is an alarm for those factories that haven’t yet taken any precautionary steps to rescue their workers from the blaze of fire.
